Water Activities

The ultimate location for water sports! Situated among the 30,000 Islands and surrounded by the crystal clear waters of Georgian Bay, Hurontario’s water sports are unparalleled.

Swimming

Hurontario’s campers almost live in the water. Around the island swims, snorkeling amongst the shoals, “moon-walking,” and cliff-jumping are great ways to spend time on a hot summer day. Our highly qualified swim instructors provide flexible instruction in both Red Cross and Royal Lifesaving levels assuring you success in getting to the next level.

Hurontario has been the proud recipient of the Chapman Cup, awarded annually by the Royal Lifesaving Society to the camp that achieves the most swim badges. Well done campers!

Canoeing

With more than 100 canoes at the camp, Hurontario is the perfect place to learn to canoe! Canoeing will become almost second nature, as campers use canoes “like bicycles” to get around the islands. All our counsellors are confident canoeists; with daily technique tips and instruction, you will soon be leading the way across the water. At the end of the month, show what you have learned in our canoeing exhibitions, the Hartwood and Muntzweller.

Sailing

Our amazing fleet of 24 sailboats gives you a fantastic opportunity to develop sailing and racing skills. The winds of Georgian Bay sweep across our camp waters, the protection of the islands making for smooth sailing waters even in major winds. Outside these islands, the big waters of Georgian Bay beckon the more experienced sailors. Our variety of sailboats lets you sail alone or with as many as seven of your friends. Learn how to crew and skipper and share the excitement of our sailing competitions, the Dawson and the Pinchin.

Windsurfing

Step out of our amazing sailing fleet and onto a board to experience up close the winds of Georgian Bay. Hurontario is outfitted with a variety of windsurfers, allowing even the youngest campers to experience the thrill of gliding across the waves. Our skilled instructor will teach you all you need to know: from the basics of tacking and rigging to the excitement of riding with a harness!

Kayaking

Our river kayaks let campers learn the excitement of fast moving and open water kayak adventures. Practice control strokes, learn how to “roll”, and take your kayak into nearby swamps on exploratory missions. When you’re ready, shoot the rapids of the Gull River.

Sea-kayaking

In our fleet of sea-kayaks, you and your group will be able to explore the waters of Georgian Bay. In these sleek craft, you can cover long distances with ease, opening up the beauty of the 30,000 Islands. Kayak and camp as you trip through the near wilderness of Georgian Bay.

Fishing

Have you ever caught a fish? The waters around the camp offer a huge variety. Throw in a line and bring home a bass or pike. Learn how to tie a lure, catch and release, or even the best way to filet a fish before cooking it over an open fire. Experience the exhilaration of reeling in dinner for the rest of the group!
